General Information and Summary of Club Policies

Tournament Schedule, Format and Awards

Club tournaments are scheduled each Sunday from March 21 to September 26 during the regular season and from October 3 to 31 during the fall season. Click on Calendar under the Home Page tab in the club web portal (2021somc.golfgenius.com) for the tournament schedule. “More Info” specifies the tournament format for the day, handicap allowance and the seasonal points to be awarded. The FredEx Cup, named after the club’s founding member Fred Coons, is a season long points race from March 21 through August 22 culminating in a one-day playoff on August 29 to determine the 12 qualifiers for the SOMC Team Match Play competition on September 12 and 19. Points are awarded every week with each flight playing for first place points. Points range up to 500 points for regular tournament, up to 1000 for Monthly Masters, and up to 2000 for major tournaments (President’s Cup, Match Play and Club Championships). Winners of the Monthly Masters in each flight gain entry to the Master of the Masters, a parallel tournament during the playoff. Tournament formats and the applicable rules for the Monthly Master, Major Championships, FredEx Cup seasonal points race, playoffs and post-season competitions are described in the membership information and application packet. It also lists the awards associated with these tournaments.

Tournament Signups

Players can sign up for a tournament by responding to an e-mail invitation or through the club portal. You will receive signup invitations two weeks prior to each scheduled tournament. The first signup invitation will be received on March 7 for the March 21st season-opening tournament. Players can respond to the invitation by clicking either “Playing” or “Not Playing”. You can also sign up three additional members or one guest. The USGA Tournament Management software will automatically log the responses into the Round Player Roster. Players can also sign up or cancel at the Club web portal. Online signups will close each Friday at noon. Please cancel before this time if you’ve previously signed up and can no longer play. We would prefer that all players sign up on-line but if this is not possible you can call Silver Oak (775-841-7000, ext 2) or sign up in-person at the pro shop up to two weeks in advance of a tournament. Silver Oak staff will complete your signup using the online tool at the Club web portal.

Tee Time and Pairing Assignments

Once the online signups close each Friday, the Tournament Committee will assign pairings and tee times (starting holes for shotguns) for the players who have responded as “Playing” during the open signup period. The tee sheets will be posted weekly on the club web portal by noon Saturday. The pairings for tournaments with tee times are by players’ preferences. The particular tournament determines pairings for shotgun starts: players’ preference for travel days and Monthly Masters;  players’ handicaps for round 1 of the President’s Cup and Club Championship; order of finish (gross scores) in the first round for round 2 of the President’s Cup and Club Championship; and accumulated seasonal points for the Playoffs. The players’ preferences are based upon the information provided in the questionnaires that are submitted with your membership application. Please inform the Tournament Committee if you need to update your preferences during the season.

New Member Orientation

The Silver Oak Men’s Club extends a warm welcome to our new members. We thank you for choosing SOMC and hope you enjoy playing in our club. A voluntary orientation session will be held for new members prior to and during the scheduled tournaments on March 21 and 28, 2021. Pre-round orientation includes a “meet and greet” with board members and other new members over coffee and donuts, review of club rules, and a Q&A session. New members will then play in the day’s scheduled tournament. Each pairing will include a Board member who will be able to answer questions regarding club rules and policies and point out local rules that are applicable on the golf course at Silver Oak.

Guest Policy

Members may invite guests to play in any of the regular club events and Monthly Masters (i.e., excludes Club Championship, Match Play Championship, President’s Cup and Playoffs). Guest invitations are intended for prospective new members to evaluate membership in SOMC and will be extended once per guest. Guests may not enter in the tournament game but may optionally enter in gross skins.

Tournament Entry Fees

There is a mandatory $10 entry fee for the game associated with the weekly tournaments (except $20 prior to first or qualifying round of major championships). Players will need to have played in a minimum of three club events to qualify for entry into the President’s Cup, four events for the match play championship and five events for the Club Championship. New members with insufficient number of posted scores to establish a GHIN handicap index may not enter in tournament games or net skins but can voluntarily enter in gross skins. The club retains 15% of the game entry fees to cover costs for year-end awards/luncheon, other club events throughout the season and hole-in-one insurance (up to $100).  Separate entry fees of $5 each for gross and net skins are optional. Place your entry fees in an envelope when you check in and drop it in the fee/scorecard bin. Make sure you have written your name on the envelope and checked off the games you are entering.

Tournament Flights and Tees

Tournaments consist of three flights with equal numbers of players unless specified otherwise by the format or Tournament Committee. Handicap cutoff between flights vary with the number of players in the field. Handicaps in the first flight have typically top out at about 9 and second flight at about 14. The third flight is capped at a maximum playing handicap of 27 (similar to NNGA-sponsored tournaments). All play is from the blue tees unless specified by the tournament format.

Handicap Policy

The SOMC Board has adopted the following tournament and handicap policy for the 2021 season (see membership information and application packet for additional information).

  1. An active GHIN handicap index is required for entry into SOMC tournament and net skins games.
  2. The handicap index used to determine a player’s playing handicap depends on the type of tournament.
    1. Qualified current GHIN handicap index for regular tournaments. A “qualified” handicap index requires at least half of the revision scores be from SOMC or Silver Oak Senior Men’s Club (SOSMC) events. Your 3-month low index will be used during regular tournaments if you do not have the required number of qualifying revision scores.
    2. 3-month low index for Monthly Masters, Playoffs and Team Match Play.
    3. 6-month low index for the President’s Cup, and Match Play and Club Championships.
    4. The maximum allowable playing handicap is capped at 27 for all SOMC tournament games and at 18 for net skins.

Playing by the Rules and Code of Conduct

The club’s primary goal is to promote an environment of friendly competition that is based upon sportsmanship, integrity, courtesy and respect for fellow players. It is the player’s responsibility to know and play by the rules of golf. Play the ball as it lies at all times, unless otherwise allowed by the rules of golf or specified by the Tournament Committee, and putt out on every hole. The more commonly applied USGA and local rules are summarized in the membership information and application packet. Players are also expected to adhere to the etiquettes of the game and to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner. Refrain from abusive language, cheating, club throwing, disrespect of fellow competitors, or abuse of golf course property. Violation of this code of conduct may result in suspension or termination of membership.

Pace of Play

All groups are expected to complete their rounds in less than 4½ hours. Note that this is the maximum and all groups should finish well within the allowable time if everyone plays ready golf. Groups are encouraged to request tee times according to their usual pace of play to reduce potential backups on the course and to enable compliance with the pace-of-play policy by all. The Scoring Team will enforce the guidelines that are described in the SOMC Pace-of-Play Policy (see membership information and application packet).

Score Cards and Posting Scores

  1. First and last name (legible)
  2. All scores must be dated, signed and attested.
  3. For holes that are unfinished, post your “most likely score,” which is the actual number of strokes taken plus the number of strokes, in the player’s best judgment, which would be needed to finish the hole from that position more than half of the time. The score for those holes should be preceded by an X on the scorecard. Be aware that players who submit scorecards with an X on any hole will be disqualified from the game without refund of the mandatory entry fee (but will be eligible for skins and participation FredEx Cup points). Exceptions to this disqualification rule include the following formats: Match Play, Stableford, team best balls, and Eclectic (President’s Cup).
  4. Incomplete or unreadable cards will be disqualified.
  5. Scorecards are exchanged prior to play for Club Championship and President’s Cup.

The Tournament Committee will post scores to GHIN for SOMC events. Members are expected to post all other 9-hole (7 to 12 holes completed) or 18-hole (13 holes or more completed) scores of stroke play during the active season (3/15 to 11/30 in our area) as governed by USGA posting procedures. Score holes that are not played as par plus the number of strokes that you are entitled to according to your handicap. The maximum score on any hole for handicapping purposes is net double bogey under the World Handicap System.

Tournament Payouts and Tie Breakers

Tournament game winnings are paid out to the lowest net scores for a quarter of the field in each flight (except major championships) plus $20 for low gross and $15 for closet to the pin. Championship winnings are paid to low gross and net over field and to the lowest net scores for a quarter of the remaining field in each flight. All ties remain ties unless otherwise announced by the Tournament Committee. The Club Championship and President’s Cup winners will be determined in a same-day playoff following lunch (no shows will be considered a forfeit). The two Club Champions (low gross and net) will earn entry into NNGA’s annual Tournament of Champions. All payouts are now in cash.

Posting and Review of Tournament Results

The Scoring Team for 2021 of Eric Fujita (lead scorer), Paul Jorgensen, Eric Schaub and Gary Yoakum (backup) will post the preliminary tournament results for review on the web portal after conclusion of play (usually within two hours). Click on results tab and select a date. Results for tournament and skins games are shown on separate pages. Reveal individual score cards by clicking on a player’s name and click on expand all in the skins sections for details of each winning skin. Contact the Scoring Team by noon Monday if you suspect an error in the scoring. Challenges to a posted score will be rejected if it matches the score on the signed and attested score card. Results will be final at the end of the day on Monday and winning may be picked up at the Silver Oak pro shop starting Tuesday morning.

2021 Tournament Formats, Rules and Awards

On the 2021 schedule you’ll find the date, start times, type of start (tee times or shotgun), format, handicap percentage and Fred-Ex Points to be awarded. Handicap percentage is the allowance that is applied to the course handicap resulting in your playing handicap. Lowest index from the previous 6 months of the current revision is used for major championships and the 3-month low index is used for Monthly Masters, Playoffs and Team Match Play. Fred-Ex Points are the amount of points offered each week based on the format (2x points for Monthly Master and 4x points for major championships).

Tournament Formats

Handicap Individual Stoke Play (ISP) - The total strokes taken for 18 holes minus handicap strokes.

Tips (Black Tees) - All players tee off from the black tees for the entire round.

Modified Stableford - Point values are given based on the net score for each hole: Double Eagle (8 pts); Eagle (5 pts); Birdie (3 pts); Par (1 pt); Bogie (-1 pt); and Dbl Bogie or worse (-3 pts). Handicap allowance of 80%

2 Man Scramble - In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the two tee shots is selected and both players play their second shots from that spot. The better of the second shots is determined, and then both play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed. Team handicap allowance of 35% of A player and 15% of B player.

2-Man Net Best Ball - Each player, on the 2-man team, plays his own golf ball the entire round. Each team should have two 18 hole scores on the scorecard. The lowest net score, or best balls, from each hole serves as the teams’ score for each hole. Handicap allowance of 90% for each player.

Chapman – (1) Both players on a 2-man team hit drives. (2) Each plays the other’s ball for the second shot. (3) The best of the second shots is selected and from there the two partners play alternate shot into the hole starting with the player whose second shot was not selected. Handicap allowances of 60% of A + 40% of B.

You Pick (Red/White/Black) - 18-hole stroke play. You decide which 6 holes are played from the red tees, which 6 holes are played from the white tees and which 6 holes are played from the black tees. Handicaps are based off the white tees.

Semi-Major and Major Championships

Monthly Masters (Semi Majors with double seasonal points)- A monthly ISP tournament to determine qualifiers for the year end Master of the Masters. Three flights will be determined on the day of the tournament based on those playing. Winners of each flight are entered in the Master of the Masters portion of the playoffs towards the end of the season. If a winner of a previous monthly masters wins again, he will win the prize money, but the second-place finisher will be the qualifier.

Presidents Cup (Major with quadruple seasonal points) - An eclectic format is a two-round golf tournament that results in one 18-hole score per player. The lowest score made on each hole between the two rounds is recorded as their score producing an 18-hole score. Example: a golfer makes a 6 on hole No. 1 in Round 1 and a 4 on the same hole in Round 2. That golfer's final score for the first hole is  4. In the event of a tie, a playoff will occur immediately after lunch (forfeit if no show). Rounds will not be posted to GHIN. In order to play in the President’s Cup, you must have played in at least three (3) SOMC scheduled events.

Match Play Championship (Major with quadruple seasonal points)This individual match play championship is played over four weeks in July with an initial qualifying round of individual stroke play. There is a one-time entry fee of $20 for the championship, which is payable prior to the qualifying round. In order to play in the Match Play Championship, you must have played in at least four (4) SOMC scheduled events. Players who are ineligible or cannot commit to playing in the entire championship can play in a separate concurrent tournament indicated on the schedule. Players in each of three flights with the four lowest gross and four remaining lowest net scores will advance to the match play portion of the championship. Net scores will determine seeding for the quarter finals. Quarter-final, semi-final and final matches will be played over three consecutive Sundays. The finals will also include matches to determine 3rd place. Payouts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places are 50%, 30% and 20%, respectively of the total purse in each flight. Corresponding seasonal points are 2000, 1500 and 1200 points, and 1000 for 4th place. Four remaining players in the quarter finals will each receive 550 points, eight remaining players who advanced to the match play portion will each receive 250 points, and all other players that entered the initial qualifying round will receive 150 points.

Club Championship (Major with quadruple seasonal points) - A 36-hole cumulative handicapped stroke play event played on Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend. In the event of a tie, a playoff will occur immediately after lunch (forfeit if no show). Rounds are posted as “C-scores” in GHIN. In order to play in the Club Championship, you must have played in at least five (5) SOMC scheduled events.

Post Regular-Season Competitions

Playoffs and Master of the Masters

The final FredEx Cup standings will be posted to the club web portal on Sunday August 22. Top 30 in seasonal points will qualify for the FredEx Cup playoffs on August 29, 2021 (8:00 shotgun) and will have until noon Friday (August 27) to sign up to play. Thereafter, the Tournament Committee will give open spots to players that are next in the standings. Seasonal points will reset for the playoffs and are converted to starting strokes as shown below (similar to the PGA FedEx Cup Finals).

FredEx Cup Champion (top in seasonal points)                                   5 under par

President’s Cup, Match Play and Club Champions                              4 under par

Remaining players in seeds 2-5                                                           3 under par

Remaining players in Seeds 6-10                                                         2 under par

Seeds 11-20                                                                                          1 under par

Seeds 21-30                                                                                          even par

The field will be divided evenly into three flights and the following players will qualify for the SOMC Team Match Play on September 12 and 19.

1-2          Low gross and low net over field

3-5          Lowest gross scores in each flight among remaining players

6-8          Lowest net scores in each flight among remaining players

9-10       Two lowest net scores among remaining players regardless of flight

The remaining two spots in the SOMC Match Play will go to players with the lowest net scores in each of the two flights in the Master of the Masters tournament. This is a separate tournament for the 18 Monthly Masters winners, which will be played simultaneously with the FredEx Cup Playoffs.  All players will start at even par.  If a winner has already qualified through the Playoffs, his spot will go to the player with the next lowest net score within the same flight. Playing handicaps for the Playoffs and the Master of the Masters will be based on the 3-month low GHIN handicap index. A tiebreaker (score on the most to least difficult hole) will be used to determine winners in case of ties.
